To get $4,000.00 a month until age 90, save $1,653.50 a month instead of $1,000.00.

Or plan on $2,679.10 a month. Retiring later, spending less or adding a pension also closes the gap.

How it works

How the calculator works

Your plan has two phases. First your savings grow while you contribute. Then, from the age you retire, you live on them. The calculator follows both month by month until the age you plan for.

  1. Until you retire your contribution goes in at the end of every month and your savings earn the return before retirement.
  2. From the month you retire you take out the income you want minus your other income, at the start of every month.
  3. That withdrawal rises with inflation every month, so $4,000 keeps buying what $4,000 buys today.
  4. What is left keeps earning the return during retirement, until the money runs out or you reach the age you plan for.

Your results

Reading your results

  • Savings at retirement

What you will have on the day you retire. It is shown in today’s money, so you can compare it with prices now. Switch on future dollars to see the figure your statement would show.

  • Money lasts until

The age at which your savings can no longer pay the income you want. After that, only your other income is left. “Beyond 90” means the plan holds to the age you chose.

  • Income you can afford

The highest monthly income, including your other income, that lasts exactly until the age you plan for. Use it as a ceiling for your budget in retirement.

Pension estimates

Where to find your pension estimate

A public pension can cover a large part of the income you need. Look up your own estimate and enter the monthly amount in “Other monthly income”. Official estimates are generally shown in today’s money, which is what the calculator expects.

Four ways to make your money last longer

Figures from this calculator for the default plan: age 35, $50,000 saved, $1,000 a month, 7% before and 5% during retirement, $4,000 a month wanted and 3% inflation. With no changes, the money runs out at about 80.

  • Retire a little later

Retiring at 67 instead of 65 makes the money last to about 84. At 68 it lasts to about 86. You save for longer and spend for fewer years.

  • Raise your contribution

Increasing the $1,000 a month by 3% each year, in step with your salary, makes the money last to about 85.

  • Spend a little less

Living on $3,500 a month instead of $4,000 makes the money last to about 82. On $3,000 it lasts to about 86.

    Try it in the calculator
  • Count every income

A pension of $1,500 a month in today’s money means your savings only need to pay $2,500. The plan then lasts beyond 90.

The questions people ask most

How much do I need to retire?

It depends on the income you want, your other income, how long you plan for and the return on your savings. Enter your numbers and the calculator shows both answers: the income your plan can pay until the age you chose, and the monthly saving needed to reach the income you want.

What return should I use before and during retirement?

Before retirement, use the yearly return you expect from your investments after fees. During retirement, many people hold more cautious investments, so the return is often set lower. Returns are not guaranteed, so try a cautious figure as well.

Why is everything in today’s money?

Because prices rise. $4,000 thirty years from now buys much less than $4,000 today. Showing amounts in today’s money lets you compare the result with your budget now. The switch under Inflation shows the future dollars instead.

What does “plan until” mean?

The age up to which you want the money to last. The calculator stops there. A higher age is more cautious, because the same savings have to cover more years.

What happens if my savings run out?

From that age only your other income remains, such as a pension. The chart and the table show the year it happens, and the summary shows how much more to save, or how much less to spend, to avoid it.

Does the calculator include taxes?

No. Tax rules depend on your country and on the type of account. Enter the income you want before tax and keep in mind that part of each withdrawal may be taxed.

Is my data stored or sent anywhere?

No. All the calculations run in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved. Copy link puts your numbers in the web address, so only the people you share it with can see them.
